Female builder wins Ric New Medal For Excellence

The first and only female registered builder in Geraldton, Serena Giudice, is this year’s recipient of the Ric New Medal for Excellence.

Named after the founder of Midland Brick, the Ric New Medal is awarded to a young high achiever up to 35 years of age who has demonstrated outstanding potential, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial flair in the context of the building and construction industry in Western Australia. The selection criteria focussed solely upon practical achievements and not academic results.

The Ric New Medal was introduced by the late Mr New’s daughter, Ms Marylyn New, to recognise the enormous talents among our younger generation and to inspire others to be successful.

“One of our objectives with this award was to commemorate the name of Ric New who contributed so much to affordable home ownership in this state through his work ethic, customer service focus and free enterprise principles”, MBA Director Michael McLean said.

“Serena Giudice was a most impressive candidate and a very worthy winner.”
Serena started working with her father’s building company in Geraldton from the age of 20 after a short stint with a local computer company. Initially focussing on scheduling & estimating, Serena learnt the ropes of the family business from her father & mentor, Kevin until his death earlier this year.

She became the first female registered builder in Geraldton in July 2009 after previously establishing Geraldton Homes to operate alongside Kevin Giudice & Co. to focus on the lower end of the housing market. A multi-layered pricing/product structure was developed to cater for different clients & enhance housing affordability. A building display area has also been provided to assist clients in product selection.

Serena took on more & more responsibility in running the building business during her father’s deteriorating health and is now managing it herself; with a workforce of more than 40 employees & contractors. The business also tenders on commercial projects.

Serena is passionate about improving housing affordability & is an active member of the MBA’s Geraldton Branch Committee.

Ms Giudice, aged 30, was the unanimous choice of the judging panel which comprised Esplanade Hotel Fremantle Managing Director Marylyn New, 2005 inaugural Ric New Medalist, Robert Spadaccini and MBA Director Michael McLean.
